Upper Level

Upper Level

This is a period of relative stability, health and more even growth.  Emphasis is on intellectual growth and independence, reasoning, moving to concrete understanding to abstract thinking, imagination, culture, research and on seeing the self in relation to peers.  Children seek to acquire knowledge and find out about everything.  The 6-9 year old is in a more exploratory period and the 9-12 year old is more ordered.

The central question is “Why is it?”
The overriding desire is “To Know.”

The Classroom:

The sequential Montessori curriculum allows children in the upper grades to progress at their own pace.  Because of the variety and flexibility of the lessons, the curriculum is “individualized” to adapt to the unique learning style of each child.  Lessons are given in small group settings, followed by individual work time, and assessment by the directress.  The assessment determines if the child is ready to move on or if he/she needs further review or revision of the lesson.

The Upper Level session is from 8:30AM - 3:15PM.

The curriculum is a continuation of the subjects and materials that were first presented in pre-school and kindergarten, moving from the concrete toward the abstract.
